What is the MBBR system?

The MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) system is an aerobic biological treatment process used for wastewater purification. It relies on biocarriers, or moving plastic media, that act as a support for the growth of microorganisms that degrade the organic matter in the water.

These carriers remain in motion inside the reactor and provide a large surface for biofilm development, maintaining high biological activity in a compact volume. This configuration supports efficient treatment and makes it easy to implement in both new installations and upgrades of existing systems.

Advantages

  • Compact design. Reduces the space required for installation.
  • High-quality effluent. Supports efficient wastewater purification.
  • Easy maintenance. Simplifies system maintenance tasks.
  • Low sludge generation. Reduces sludge production during treatment.

The process, step by step

Wastewater enters the reactor, where the moving carriers are kept distributed and in constant motion by aeration. While the water stays in the system, the microorganisms attached to these carriers consume and transform the biodegradable organic matter in it.

Aeration has a dual role: it supplies the oxygen needed for microbial activity and keeps the carriers circulating. At the end of this stage, the water continues to the downstream processes defined in the treatment system, where the solids generated can be separated.

Designed for long-term operation

The carriers used in the system have a geometry specially developed to offer a large growth surface in a small space. Their inner zones provide protected areas that help the biomass stay in place despite the movement inside the reactor.

The system is designed to work continuously and to integrate easily with other treatment stages. Its compact configuration, biomass retention within the process and the absence of mandatory sludge recirculation to the reactor simplify operation and maintain suitable conditions over long periods.
