500 m³ of wastewater treated per day at Industrias Ales
Together with CWT we designed, supplied and integrated the wastewater treatment plant of an edible fats and oils manufacturer: screening, equalization, GEM flotation, MBBR reactor, disinfection and sludge dewatering.

GEM flotationAdvanced primary treatment
An effluent with fats, oils and a high organic load
The effluent from edible fats and oils production had to be treated to meet environmental discharge regulations, in a compact plant with its own sludge handling.
- Fats and oilsThey had to be separated before reaching biological treatment.
- High organic loadA BOD of 1,850 mg/L requires robust biological treatment.
- Space and sludgeA small available footprint and sludge that had to be dewatered for disposal.
Removal efficiencypercentage of the pollutant load removed by the plant
Influent wastewater: COD of 3,032 mg/L, BOD of 1,850 mg/L and 800 mg/L of suspended solids. BOD and COD measure the organic matter in the water.
- 500 m³/daydesign flow
- 132.5 m³MBBR biological reactor
- 89.2 %BOD removal
- 1.9 m³/daydewatered sludge
Treatment train: from effluent to discharge
Six stages grouped into three steps: condition the water, separate the fats and degrade the organic matter, and disinfect while the sludge is dewatered.
- Process effluent
- 1Screening and equalization
- 2GEM flotation and MBBR
- 3Disinfection and sludge
- Discharge

1
Screening and equalization
A screen retains coarse solids and the equalization tank stabilizes flow and pH.
- Self-cleaning rotary screen, 0.5 mm
- Equalization tank of 45 m³ or more
- D-Loop recirculation with pH control

2
GEM flotation and MBBR reactor
Flotation separates fats and solids with dissolved air; the biological reactor degrades the organic matter.
- 6 LSGM mixing heads with coagulant
- MBBR reactor of 132.5 m³ with 50% media fill
- Secondary clarifier

3
Disinfection and sludge
Chlorination in a baffled tank and mechanical dewatering of all the sludge.
- Contact tank of 14 m³ with 60 min retention
- Multi-disc screw dewaterer
- Sludge from 9.9 to 1.9 m³/day after dewatering
Automation and control
- Container with control room and laboratory
- Closed-loop pH control
- Automated blowers
- Progressive cavity pumps for sludge
- Automatic chemical dosing
- Centralized power and control panels
An integrated solution together with CWT
Sanitron and CWT (Clean Water Technology) designed, supplied and integrated the complete treatment train.
What Sanitron and CWT did
- EngineeringConceptual and detailed engineering and electromechanical design of the complete train.
- Equipment supplyGEM system, MBBR media, blowers, dosing pumps, clarifier and disc filter.
- FabricationModular carbon steel tanks and a container equipped for plant control.
- Supervision and start-upInstallation supervision, hydrostatic tests and commissioning.
Results
- Reduced pollutant loadRemoval of 93% of suspended solids, 90% of nitrogen, 89.2% of BOD and 78.9% of COD.
- Compact, continuous plantGEM flotation and the MBBR reactor, both high-rate, take up little space.
- Sludge under controlMechanical dewatering reduces sludge volume and makes safe final disposal easier.
