What is the GEM system?
The GEM System, developed by Clean Water Technologies (CWT), is a physicochemical treatment technology for solid-liquid separation in wastewater through flocculation and flotation processes. Its configuration differs from conventional dissolved air flotation (DAF) systems by incorporating Liquid–Solid–Gas Mixing (LSGM) heads as an integral part of the system.
GEM technology is an alternative for treating effluents that require a physicochemical stage before contaminant separation. Its design integrates the main process components within a single treatment unit, establishing a specific configuration for conditioning the wastewater and then separating it.
- 1Pressurized aeration100% of the flow is aerated before floc formation is complete.
- 2LSGM headsThey mix the wastewater with the chemicals and the air.
- 3FlotationThe flocs rise and separate from the treated water.
Advantages
- High separation efficiency. Improves contaminant removal.
- Chemical optimization. Makes better use of reagents.
- More concentrated sludge. Produces solids with lower water content.
- Compact design. Reduces the space required.
The process, step by step
Treatment begins with 100% of the feed flow entering, which is aerated under pressure before floc formation is complete. During this stage, the LSGM heads mix the wastewater with the chemicals and the air, creating the conditions needed to condition the particles in the stream.
Once conditioned, the stream enters the flotation cell, where the flocs rise to the top and are separated from the liquid phase. The result is a treated water stream separate from the removed solids, completing the physicochemical separation stage.

Performance and operational flexibility
The GEM System is designed to handle variations in suspended solids, fats and oils loads, as well as changes in feed flow. This allows operation to continue when inlet wastewater conditions change, without limiting the system to a single load or flow condition.
The process is regulated through the LSGM heads, whose operating conditions can be adjusted to the specific treatment requirements. This gives the system the ability to adapt to changes in influent characteristics and process needs, with greater flexibility for integration under different treatment conditions.
