Flocculation

Controlled floc formation through slow mixing. Particles destabilized during coagulation clump into larger aggregates that are easier to separate.

What is flocculation?

Flocculation is a physicochemical operation designed to condition the particles previously destabilized during coagulation, promoting their transformation into larger, more consistent aggregates. This stage takes place in units designed to provide controlled hydraulic conditions, using slow-mixing systems such as paddle agitators or other low-speed mechanisms.

Sizing the unit takes into account parameters such as treatment flow, retention time and velocity gradient, because these determine the contact conditions between particles. Depending on the design, the process can be distributed across several chambers or compartments with different energy levels.

Advantages

  • Process control. Allows agitation conditions to be adjusted to the water characteristics.
  • Greater floc stability. Helps obtain aggregates in suitable condition for subsequent handling.
  • Adaptable configuration. Can be implemented with different designs and mixing stages.
  • Hydraulic continuity. Easy to place between coagulation and the separation units.

The process, step by step

Coagulated water enters the flocculator and passes through a zone of controlled agitation. The movement increases the collision frequency between destabilized particles, allowing them to stick together and gradually build larger structures.

Along the hydraulic path, the aggregates develop until they are suitable for separation. In staged configurations, agitation intensity can be reduced toward the last chambers to limit shear on the flocs already formed. The flow is then sent to the corresponding separation unit.

From fine particles to separable flocs

Flocculation creates the conditions for the solids in the water to be separated more easily in subsequent stages, improving the overall efficiency of the treatment line.
