What is the MBR system?
The MBR (Membrane Bioreactor) system is an advanced wastewater treatment technology that integrates aerobic biological degradation and membrane filtration. The process combines the action of microorganisms that degrade organic matter with a physical barrier that performs solid-liquid separation.
This configuration carries out biological treatment and effluent separation within a compact system, reducing the space required for installation and offering an alternative to conventional activated sludge processes.
- 1Biological reactorAerobic biomass degrades the organic matter.
- 2MembranesWater passes through the membrane and the solids are retained.
- 3Filtered effluentHigh-quality water leaves for its destination.
Advantages
- Compact design. Reduces the area required for installation.
- High effluent quality. Supports efficient solids separation.
- Modular configuration. Makes it easy to expand system capacity.
- Transportable unit. Can be installed as a containerized solution.
The process, step by step
Wastewater enters the biological reactor, where it comes into contact with the biomass that transforms the biodegradable organic matter. Aeration supplies the oxygen needed to maintain aerobic conditions and support microbial activity.
After biological treatment, the water is directed through the membranes. The filtered effluent passes through the membrane surface and continues to the system outlet, while the retained components remain in the process for appropriate handling.

Membrane technology
The membranes are made of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), a material chosen for its chemical stability, its resistance to chemical agents and its ease of cleaning.
They provide a filtration barrier within the MBR process and allow a configuration geared toward continuous operation. The material’s properties also make the cleaning and maintenance required over the system’s operating life easier.
