EGSB system
Expanded granular sludge bed anaerobic reactor. It treats wastewater with organic load in a small footprint, without aeration and with biogas generation.

What is the EGSB system?
The EGSB (Expanded Granular Sludge Bed) reactor is an upflow anaerobic biological system designed to treat wastewater with organic load. Operating at high upflow velocities expands the granular bed and improves contact between wastewater and biomass, promoting mass transfer and the degradation of organic matter.
- 1UpflowWater enters at the bottom at high velocity.
- 2Expanded bedImproves contact between the water and the granular biomass.
- 3Three-phase separationRetains the biomass and captures the biogas produced.
Advantages
- High organic matter removal. Promotes anaerobic degradation of the organic load.
- Low energy consumption. Operates without aeration.
- Compact design. Handles high loads in less space.
- Biogas generation. Produces biogas as a by-product.
The process, step by step
Wastewater enters at the bottom of the reactor and flows upward through the granular sludge bed. During contact with the anaerobic biomass, the organic matter is degraded and biogas is generated.
The upflow velocity keeps the bed expanded, promoting contact between substrate and microorganisms. In the upper zone, the solid, liquid and gas phases are separated, keeping the biomass inside the reactor and producing the treated effluent.

Emission and odor control
The reactor’s sealed configuration keeps the emissions generated during the anaerobic process under control, which also helps control odors during operation.
