More purified water for Baxter’s dialysis unit in Cuenca

We redesigned and expanded the clinic’s water treatment plant: higher-capacity pretreatment, automatic chemical dosing and upgraded reverse osmosis. Capacity grew by 22 m³ per day, without stopping the unit.

More capacity without stopping the dialysis unit

Baxter needed to expand and modernize the water plant of its dialysis unit in Cuenca, in the same room and with the clinic in operation.

  • Higher demandThe unit needed more flow and a larger reserve of purified water.
  • Room to be reorganizedThe equipment had to be rearranged to fit larger tanks.
  • Zero interruptionsPatients could not go without treatment during the works.
  • +22 m³/dayadditional net capacity
  • 73 m³/dayfeed water
  • 1 µmsafety filter
  • 304 AISIstainless steel frames

What changed at the plant

We expanded every treatment stage and mounted it on new stainless steel frames.

  1. Drinking water
  2. 1Expanded pretreatment
  3. 2Dosing and safety filter
  4. 3Upgraded osmosis
  5. Dialysis unit

1

Expanded pretreatment

Larger tanks to filter, soften and dechlorinate the water before osmosis.

  • Zeolite filter and softener with 200 L brine tank
  • Dual activated carbon bed with digital valves
  • Carbon tank 24″ x 72″ with Fleck 5812 valve

2

Dosing and safety filter

Automatic chemical injection and a final barrier for fine particles.

  • 2 100 L tanks with level control
  • Dosing pumps, 6 L/h
  • 304 stainless steel housing with 1 µm cartridges

3

Upgraded reverse osmosis

An additional membrane housing increases purified water production.

  • +22 m³/day of net capacity
  • New membrane housing, 4″ x 120″
  • Aligned sanitary interconnections

Frames, installation and control

  • Frames and supports in stainless steel AISI 304, with lifting points and levelers for large tanks.
  • Electrical connection to the existing panels and tank monitoring with touch screen.
  • New control heads and transparent PVC lines.

Complete re-engineering, with a one-year warranty

Sanitron handled the project from start to finish and delivered the system stabilized.

What Sanitron did

  1. Engineering and layoutPlant re-engineering and new room layout.
  2. Fabrication and supply304 stainless steel frames, supports, interconnections and filtration.
  3. Dismantling and installationRemoval of the previous equipment and installation of the new tanks and heads.
  4. Start-up and warrantyTests, commissioning and handover with a one-year warranty.

Results

  • More flow and more reserveThe dialysis unit has an additional 22 m³ of purified water per day.
  • Renewed infrastructureFrames and hydraulics in 304 stainless steel, more durable and hygienic.
  • Medical-grade waterThe system meets the design specifications for dialysis water.
