Purified water for ice and artisanal fishing in Galápagos

For WildAid Inc. we designed, supplied, installed and commissioned a pretreatment and reverse osmosis system at the collection center of the Galápagos Artisanal Fishing Production Cooperative (COPROPAG), on Santa Cruz Island.

18 m³/day reverse osmosisCOPROPAG collection center

High-chloride water at a fish collection center

The municipal water supplied to the collection center had high chlorides and a conductivity above 2,000 µS/cm, outside current regulations. That put the safety of fresh and frozen fish, and ice production, at risk.

  • Chlorides and saltsConductivity above 2,000 µS/cm in the mains water.
  • Fish safetyWater suitable for primary processing of fresh and frozen products.
  • Safe icePurified water to make the ice that preserves the catch.
  • 27.7 m³/dayfeed
  • 18 m³/dayof purified water
  • 50 to 65 %reverse osmosis recovery
  • < 64 µS/cmpurified water conductivity

Treatment train: from the mains to purified water

Four compact stages, designed to operate with simple maintenance on an island.

  1. Sediment filtrationRetains particles and suspended solids to protect the following stages.Down to 5 µm
  2. Cartridge filterPolypropylene polishing filter that protects membrane integrity.Down to 1 µm
  3. Chemical dosingChemicals that protect the membranes and extend their service life, dosed according to system operation.Automatic control
  4. Reverse osmosisAISI 316L stainless steel high-pressure multistage pump, fiberglass housings and high-rejection membranes.18 m³/day, over 90% less TDS

Automation and control

  • Centralized control with Horner PLC, with remote on/off.
  • Low-pressure switch on the feed, permeate and concentrate flowmeters and a conductivity monitor on the product water.
  • Automatic shutdown on faults and motor thermal protection.
  • Remote start
  • Online conductivity
  • Scale protection
  • 5,000 L storage

From design to training, on Santa Cruz Island

Sanitron designed and supplied the system, installed it on the island, commissioned it and trained the technical staff appointed by WildAid and COPROPAG.

What Sanitron did

  1. Detailed engineeringDesign of the water treatment and purification plant.
  2. SupplyPretreatment, reverse osmosis membranes, pumps and control panels.
  3. Installation on the islandTechnical transfer to Galápagos, hydraulic and electrical installation, and hydrostatic tests.
  4. CommissioningStart-up, stabilization and training of WildAid and COPROPAG staff.

Results

  • 18 m³/day compliant with INEN 1108Purified water that meets the INEN 1108-2020 drinking water standard.
  • Salts and turbidity removedRemoval of dissolved salts and turbidity from the mains water.
  • Protected operationScale control with integrated digital instrumentation.
