Purified water below 1 µS/cm for Laboratorios LIFE

We designed, supplied, installed and commissioned a double-pass reverse osmosis system with electrodeionization (EDI) and automatic thermal sanitization, which produces purified water (PW) in accordance with the USP and WHO Technical Report 37.

Continuous purified water for pharmaceutical production

LIFE needed to generate pharmaceutical-grade purified water without interruptions, from drinking water, and remove ionic, organic and bacteriological contaminants.

  • Ionic purityConductivity below 1 µS/cm, under the USP limit of 1.3 µS/cm.
  • Organics and bacteria under controlReduction of total organic carbon and thermal sanitization of the entire circuit.
  • Continuous productionAutomatic operation based on tank level and online conductivity.
  • 108 m³/daydouble-pass reverse osmosis
  • 96 m³/dayelectrodeionization
  • 740 litersCIP tank for chemical cleaning
  • < 1 µS/cmpurified water conductivity

Treatment train: from drinking water to purified water

Six stages with 316L stainless steel sanitary piping and automatic hot water sanitization (HSIP) for the system’s microbiological control.

  1. Polishing filterBag filter in a stainless steel housing that retains solids and protects the membranes.Retention above 1 µm
  2. Chemical dosingDiaphragm dosing pumps inject the chemicals that preserve the membranes.Control with ORP, pH and conductivity
  3. Heat exchangerTransfers heat during the system’s thermal sanitization (HSIP).316L stainless steel
  4. Double-pass reverse osmosisStainless steel high-pressure vertical pump and two-pass membranes that retain more than 99% of salts.108 m³/day
  5. Electrodeionization (EDI)Membranes and resins continuously regenerated by electric current polish the second-pass permeate.96 m³/day, < 1 µS/cm
  6. UV disinfection and TOC controlUV lamp on the product line that reduces TOC and complements microbiological control. On the product line

Automation and control

The PLC selects the operating mode based on tank level and online conductivity, and schedules thermal sanitization.

  • ProductionThe tank calls for water and conductivity is within specification.
  • RecirculationWater returns to the system and does not enter the tank until conductivity recovers.
  • Stand-byWith the tank full, the system waits, ready to start.
  • Thermal sanitizationThe exchanger heats the circuit and temperature sensors control the cycle.
  • Online conductivity, pH and ORP
  • Three-color tower with audible alarm
  • Emergency stop on each skid
  • Restart after power failures

Turnkey, from design to commissioning

Sanitron designed, supplied, installed and started up the complete system, and validated its thermal sanitization cycles.

What Sanitron did

  1. Engineering and designSizing of the purification train for PW water.
  2. SupplyPumps, polyethylene tanks, housings, instrumentation, membranes and EDI cells.
  3. InstallationElectromechanical installation, sanitary piping with minimal dead legs and panel wiring.
  4. CommissioningAutomatic operating routines, validation of HSIP thermal cycles and start-up.

Results

  • Pharmaceutical-grade PW waterContinuous, automated and safe generation under international standards.
  • Protected membranes and EDIChemical pretreatment controlled with online ORP, pH and conductivity.
  • Fewer regeneration chemicalsContinuous EDI and automatic thermal sanitization reduce their use.
