Ultra-high-purity water for injectable drugs

Lavetec needed to produce water for injection continuously, from drinking water, and meet every USP parameter for WFI one by one.

  • Extreme purityConductivity below 1.3 µS/cm and total organic carbon below 500 ppb.
  • Microbiological controlLess than 10 CFU/100 mL and endotoxins below 0.25 EU/mL.
  • TraceabilityContinuous production with online logging of critical parameters.
  • 32.6 m³/dayultrafiltration
  • 7.7 m³/daydouble-pass reverse osmosis
  • 7.2 m³/dayelectrodeionization
  • 0.05 µS/cmproduct water conductivity

Treatment train: from drinking water to water for injection

Six stages, all with 316L stainless steel interconnections, that bring the water to the purity level required by the USP.

  1. Sediment filtrationRetains solids larger than 5 µm with an aluminosilicate media.Automatic backwash valve
  2. UltrafiltrationRemoves colloids, viruses, bacteria and suspended solids.32.6 m³/day, 316L CIP tank
  3. Heat exchangerTransfers heat during the system’s thermal sanitization.316L stainless steel
  4. Double-pass reverse osmosisTwo stages that remove dissolved solids, with automatic flushing and CIP.7.7 m³/day
  5. Electrodeionization (EDI)Continuous ion exchange assisted by electric current, without regenerant chemicals.7.2 m³/day, 0.05 µS/cm
  6. UV disinfection and TOC controlUV lamp on the product line that reduces TOC and reinforces microbiological control. On the product line

Automation and dosing

  • Stainless steel panel with Siemens PLC and IP65-rated 7″ touch screen.
  • Automatic dosing of sodium metabisulfite, sodium hydroxide and antiscalant.
  • Integrated alarms for chemical levels, flows, temperatures and motor faults.
  • Online conductivity, pH and ORP
  • Ultrasonic flowmeters
  • 316L actuated valves with clamp connection
  • Pressure switches and sanitary gauges

Turnkey, from design to handover

Sanitron handled the complete project and delivered the system running, with specialized technical support.

What Sanitron did

  1. Detailed engineeringDesign and sizing of the WFI purification train.
  2. SupplyEquipment, membranes, EDI modules, instrumentation and sanitary pumps.
  3. Installation and integration316L high-purity piping, panel, PLC, HMI and alarm logic.
  4. Testing and handoverHydrostatic tests, calibration, commissioning and operational handover.

Results

  • USP-compliant water for injectionEfficient, automated production in accordance with the current pharmacopeia.
  • Online traceabilityPrecise control of all critical process parameters.
  • High reliabilityUltrafiltration, double-pass osmosis and EDI work as successive barriers.
