Projects / Water for hemodialysis

Purified water for Baxter’s dialysis unit in Ambato

We designed, supplied, installed and commissioned a stainless steel double-pass reverse osmosis system. It produces 40 m³ of purified water per day with a conductivity below 10 µS/cm.

Double-pass reverse osmosisWater for hemodialysis

Drinking water with too many salts for a dialysis process

The mains water arrived with a conductivity of 594.2 µS/cm. The dialysis unit needed purified water below 35 µS/cm, stable and continuous.

  • High dissolved saltsThe feed water was almost 17 times the conductivity requirement.
  • Patient safetyIn every session, dialysis water comes into contact with the blood through the dialyzer.
  • Uninterrupted operationThe unit needed 40 m³ of purified water every day, without interruptions.
  • 73 m³/dayfeed water
  • 40 m³/daypurified water
  • < 10 µS/cmpermeate conductivity
  • 316Lstainless steel in the osmosis unit

Treatment train: from drinking water to dialysis

Six stages grouped into three steps: prepare the water, purify it and keep it free of microorganisms up to the point of use.

  1. Drinking water
  2. 1Pretreatment
  3. 2Double-pass osmosis
  4. 3Polishing and disinfection
  5. Dialysis unit

1

Pretreatment

Protects the membranes: retains particles, removes hardness and removes oxidants and organic matter.

  • Sediment filtration down to 5 µm
  • Softener with SaniExchange Na⁺ resin
  • 2 SaniCarb 850 activated carbon filters

2

Double-pass reverse osmosis

Two membrane passes remove dissolved solids and produce the purified water.

  • 40 m³/day of purified water
  • Skid and membrane housings in stainless steel 316L
  • Automatic flushing and CIP cleaning

3

Polishing and disinfection

Retains bacteria and endotoxins and controls microorganisms up to the return of the distribution system.

  • Endotoxin filtration
  • UV-C disinfection
  • Sampling points after osmosis and on the loop

Automation and control

  • PLC and IP66 touch screen
  • Variable frequency drives
  • pH and ORP sensors
  • Online conductivity meters
  • Pressure switches and transmitters
  • Emergency stop

Turnkey, from design to handover

Sanitron handled the entire project and delivered the system running inside the clinic.

What Sanitron did

  1. Detailed engineeringDouble-pass design, integrated with the clinic’s existing equipment.
  2. SupplyStainless steel osmosis, pretreatment, chemical dosing, instrumentation and panel.
  3. Electromechanical installationInterconnection of skids and auxiliary services at the clinic.
  4. Start-up and handoverPerformance tests, commissioning and operational handover.

Results

  • Less than 10 µS/cm in the permeateStable purified water, with a wide margin against the 35 µS/cm requirement.
  • Hygiene and durabilitySkid, piping, housings and membrane housings in stainless steel.
  • Lower energy consumptionVariable frequency drives on the high-pressure pumps and automatic control from the touch screen.
